Abi Phillips publicized that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Abi Phillips of Hollyoaks has disclosed that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
After having two lumps in her neck checked, the 28-year-old actress, who portrayed Liberty Savage in the Channel 4 serial, rushed to Instagram to share her terrible news.
“So, I took these pictures before my scans and after my biopsy having a good old laugh about how ridiculously dressed up I looked in the hospital before a gig, not expecting for one moment to get the news that I did two weeks later,” Abi wrote alongside selfies of herself wearing a hospital gown, face mask, and a bandage over her throat.
Abi admitted that she has been there before.
“I’d previously been turned away by the doctors after they discovered two lumps in my neck; they’d dismissed it and claimed I was ‘young’ and it wouldn’t be anything, that I was ‘probably getting over a cold’ or that my body was ‘fighting something off,'” she continued. Even though that’s what I wanted to hear, I wanted to double-check everything for my own piece of mind.”
Abi was advised by a professional that her symptoms were concerning and that she needed surgery and treatment.
Love Island singer Demi Jones, who had a full thyroidectomy after being diagnosed in May 2021, is grateful to Abi for showing her social media fans where her tumors were in the same way Abi did.
“I scheduled an appointment with a doctor, and she instantly expressed worry about the location of my tumors and referred me for an urgent biopsy and scans,” she explained. Fast forward two weeks, and I had an appointment with a physician at the QE hospital shortly before Easter weekend, who sat me down and informed me that I had been diagnosed with thyroid cancer and would require surgery and radiotherapy treatment. I never imagined being told I have cancer at the age of 28. You never expect it to happen to you. I wouldn’t have gone to a specialist if I hadn’t seen @demijones1’s post about her lumps in the stomach.
Abi will undergo surgery in the coming days, and she has advised everyone to seek medical attention if they notice anything “abnormal” on their body.
“If you detect a lump or something weird on your body, never assume it’s nothing, don’t be assured you’re alright by your GP because you’re ‘young,’ always get things checked out by a specialist if you can and insist on tests even if it turns out to be nothing,” she added.
After my operation, I’ll be on the path to recovery by next week.”
Abi starred as Liberty Savage on the Channel 4 soap for two years, from 2007 until 2013.
She later left to compete on The Voice, but was not successful because none of the judges voted for her.
She was cast in Hollyoaks after penning the song Missing You, which was performed when Carley Stenson’s character Steph Cunningham died in a house fire.
