Jamie McAnsh ascents to base camp on crutches on Everest.
Eight years after waking up paralyzed, a man on crutches has reached Everest base camp.
Jamie McAnsh, from Cwmbran, Torfaen, suffers from complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a chronic and excruciating pain condition.
Jamie, however, has realized his childhood dream and reached base camp at 5,364m following an 11-day trek (17,600ft).
He admitted, “There were times during this journey when I didn’t think I was going to make it.”
“I was completely spent. It’s been a difficult period “Jamie said:
“It wasn’t until the next day that I realized what I’d done.”
On crutches, a man attempts to conquer Mount Everest
Everest has been my dream since I was seven years old.
On Mount Everest, China will establish a “separation line.”
Jamie went to bed “as usual” on January 6, 2014, but awoke the next morning paralyzed from the waist down after rupturing his spine in his sleep.
Jamie was diagnosed with CRPS after another 13 months, a condition that has no cure but often improves over time.
He had to relearn how to walk, and after a long rehabilitation, he has regained some mobility but still uses crutches to get around.
“One of the hardest things the team had to think about was where to put their feet,” he said after finishing his Everest challenge. “I had to think about where to put my feet and my crutches.”
