Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship?

Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship in a play-off following a thrilling finish.

Justin Thomas won the US PGA Championship after Mito Pereira’s disastrous finish caused the first play-off at a men’s major since the 2017 Masters.

Pereira had a three-shot lead over Matt Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris going into the final day. And the Chilean, who was attempting to win a major for the first time, maintained his advantage until the final hole.

Thomas and Zalatoris, who both finished aggressively, had cut his lead to one shot at that moment. And Pereira made the critical error of pulling out the driver on the 18th, when a three wood or perhaps a long iron would have sufficed.

The 27-year-old subsequently chopped his drive and found the water, making a double bogey and eventually finishing tied for third with Cameron Young on four under par, his prospects of victory dashed in the most dramatic of circumstances. And Thomas was the ultimate winner as a result of Pereira’s poor finish, defeating Zalatoris in the three-hole play-off.

Thomas, who won the PGA Championship in 2017, made a stunning charge in the final round after slipping down the leaderboard on Saturday. He started the tournament with back-to-back 67s on Thursday and Friday, but a 74 on Saturday hurt his hopes.

Despite starting the day seven strokes behind the leader, Thomas finished the day five under par with a 67.
