In West Virginia, an armed female bystander kills a man who was firing at a party.
According to police, a female partygoer in the United States stopped a potential mass shooting when she pulled out her gun and fatally shot a man who had opened fire on a crowd with a semi-automatic rifle.
Shortly before returning to target the group of 30 to 40 people in Charleston, West Virginia, the gunman was asked to slow down.
According to police spokesman Tony Hazelett, the woman’s quick reaction saved lives.
It comes amid a national debate about guns in the aftermath of a school shooting in Texas.
The suspect had passed through the area earlier that evening when he was told to slow down because children were playing.
He returned armed with an AR-15-style rifle.
“She’s just a member of the community who was lawfully carrying her weapon,” he explained. “And instead of fleeing the threat, she confronted it and saved several lives.”
After the shooting, the woman remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
According to police, no charges will be filed against her.
Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history, was discovered dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.
According to Mr Hazelett, it is unclear how Butler obtained the weapon, which he was not legally allowed to carry as a convicted felon.
It comes after a teen gunman killed 21 people at a Texas elementary school with a legally purchased AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
