Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to deliver an important speech at the UN General Assembly (UNGA) during the ongoing session in New York. Key issues expected to be raised include Pakistan’s deepening economic challenges, especially its “debt trap,” and the impact of climate change, as Pakistan continues to grapple with the devastating effects of the 2022 floods. He is likely to emphasize the need for more international support for climate-vulnerable nations.
Additionally, Sharif is anticipated to advocate for a peaceful resolution to global conflicts, including calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and addressing the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war, which has exacerbated inflation in Pakistan and globally.
His agenda may also include meetings with various global leaders to strengthen bilateral ties, although no formal meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden is planned as yet.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan is expected to raise critical issues like Islamophobia, the Kashmir dispute, and the Gaza conflict in his upcoming speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Pakistan has been a strong advocate against Islamophobia on international platforms. Pakistan has pushed for international recognition of Islamophobia as a serious global issue, previously supporting the UN resolution to designate March 15 as the “International Day to Combat Islamophobia.”
Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir remains steadfast. Shehbaz Sharif is expected to highlight the ongoing human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir. He will likely call for the international community to address the situation and press for the implementation of UN resolutions that advocate for the right of Kashmiris to self-determination. Pakistan views the abrogation of Article 370 by India, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status, as illegal and a move that exacerbates tensions in the region
Regarding Gaza and the broader Palestine-Israel conflict, PM Shehbaz is expected to voice Pakistan’s strong support for Palestinian rights. Pakistan has consistently condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, calling for an end to the occupation and a peaceful resolution based on a two-state solution. Sharif may also demand an immediate ceasefire, drawing attention to the humanitarian crisis and the need for international intervention
