Suri’s judgement on 123 PTI resignations is overturned.
Ex-deputy speaker Qasim Suri’s permission of 123 Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) legislators’ resignations was overturned by newly-elected National Assembly (NA) Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf on Saturday.
The new speaker’s first order after taking the oath was to repeat the procedure according to the regulations. He directed that the PTI legislators’ resignations be presented to the assembly secretariat once more for this reason.
Notably, Qasim Suri, the NA deputy speaker, resigned minutes before the session began in order to vote for the no-confidence resolution against him. Suri’s removal and the choice of a new speaker were on the agenda for today’s NA session, which was set to begin at noon.
Suri had accepted the resignations before stepping down.
