Infowars has declared bankruptcy.

Alex Jones, the US conspiracy theorist who is facing multiple defamation lawsuits from parents of victims of a massacre he called a hoax, has filed bankruptcy for his far-right website Infowars, according to records disclosed on Monday.

The bankruptcy petition, often known as “Chapter 11,” is intended to halt civil court proceedings while the company develops recovery strategies so that it may continue to operate.

Parents of victims of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut have been suing the well-known but extremely controversial figure on America’s rightwing fringe and proponent of several disproved conspiracy theories for years.

Jones claimed the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, including 20 children, was staged.
