Rapid Fire with Shahzada Irfan from The News
Iqra Kashif from Rapid News hosted a brief discussion with a senior journalist from The News, Shahzada Irfan.
How did you get into the field of journalism?
It was during my time as a student I was offered a job in the field of Journalism, having knowledge of current affairs I decided to opt for journalism.
What sort of a student were you?
I wasn’t extraordinary, I was just like other students.
You have been on international projects, share with us your experience.
I have been to many places, I was offered the Daniel Pearl fellowship. I learned a lot working as a field journalist, it was totally a different experience.
What problems do journalists face here in Pakistan?
If you see the market here, many journalists don’t hold a degree. Also, journalists are underpaid even though there is a transformation going on, as everything is turning online. University curriculums are outdated, I have been teaching here at Punjab University, skill development is an issue here in Pakistan. Developed countries have multi-tasking journalists who can work independently.
Did you marry a girl of your choice?
No, it was my parent’s decision, totally arranged.
Do you feel you should have been in a different profession?
There isn’t much growth here, even when switching jobs one is most likely to be demoted. I studied political science and law.
If you were to write your autobiography, what would you title it?
Kia khoya Kia Paya.
Do you think our media is free?
Self-censorship is an important part of the entire process. One has to be very careful what is being put-up. There are many sensitive stories that can’t be published without the consent of institutions.
Who is your favorite journalist and actress?
Sohail Warraich is one of my favorites. He has great exposure and is a very down to earth person. There are many actresses I adore from our drama industry. Saba Qamar is one of them.
