The total number of spider species has risen to 50,000
There are currently 50,000 different types of spiders on the planet, according to the World Spider Catalog.
According to the World Spider Catalog, there are 50,000 different types of spiders on the planet right now, with another 50,000 perhaps lurking nearby.
According to the WSC, which is situated in the Natural History Museum of Bern in the Swiss capital, the Guriurius minuano, a jumping spider belonging to the Salticidae family that chases its victims on shrubs and trees in southern Brazil, Uruguay, and near Buenos Aires, is the 50,000th spider recorded.
Arachnologist Kimberly S. Marta and her colleagues from Brazil named it after the now-extinct Minuane people who formerly lived in the area.
While it took 265 years to reach 50,000 spiders, the rate of discovery is steadily increasing, and it is expected that it will take less than 100 years to reach the same number.
The WSC’s publishers said, “We estimate there are still over 50,000 more spider species to uncover.”
The spider catalogue is available for free on the museum’s website.
According to the museum, “Spiders are the most prominent predators in Earth’s terrestrial settings.” “Their ecological importance should not be overlooked.”
“They are the most important insect population controllers, devouring 400 to 800 million tonnes of insects each year, and hence are of critical importance to people.”
