Bencic overcomes Jabeur and wins her sixth career title
Bencic, who was competing in her maiden clay-court final, fought her way through a back-and-forth third set before winning in 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Bencic is the first Swiss woman to win the WTA 500 event since former World No. 1 Martina Hingis in 1999.
“I’m really delighted to win the first title on clay,” Bencic remarked after the match.
“I think I fought for approximately a week.” I was two points away from being eliminated in the first round, and I feel this is how you win a tournament.”
“It means a lot, especially considering this is the tournament’s 50th anniversary, and being among those names makes me very thrilled.”
