About World Heritage Day 2022.

About World Heritage Day 2022.

International Monuments and Sites Day is observed every year on April 18th. World Heritage Day is another name for it.

This global event is organized by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in Paris.

Its goal is to encourage local residents and communities to value cultural heritage. The day also attempts to raise awareness of the diversity and vulnerability of cultural heritage, as well as preservation initiatives.

Historical context and significance

In 1982, ICOMOS proposed that April 18 be designated as International Monuments and Sites Day.

The day was recognized a global event during UNESCO’s 22nd General Conference the following year. ICOMOS has since recommended a topic for this day.

The topic for 2022 is “Heritage and Climate.” ICOMOS has requested that its members, individuals, and organizations plan activities.

The focus for this year is climate justice and equity while also conserving cultural heritage. It’s also an opportunity to consider how to fairly protect disadvantaged populations.

“This day provides a timely opportunity to highlight strategies to promote the full potential of heritage conservation research and practice in delivering climate-resilient pathways to strengthen sustainable development while advocating for just transitions to low-carbon futures,” according to ICOMOS.
