Denmark is holding a referendum on dropping its EU defense opt-out.

Danes will vote in a referendum on whether to end a 30-year opt-out and join the EU’s defense and security policy.

Denmark is the only EU member with a defense reservation.

However, it, like its Nordic neighbors Sweden and Finland, has been rethinking its security policy since Russia launched its war on Ukraine.

Opinion polls show that Danes favor closer European defense ties, which could have an impact on their military future.

Similarly, there has been much misunderstanding about what the vote means in a country that is already a member of Nato’s defensive alliance.

Why is this referendum important?

Danish leaders argue that the regional security situation has changed, requiring Denmark to work harder.

“I believe wholeheartedly that we must vote yes,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Sunday during a televised debate. “At a time when Europe needs to fight for security, we must be more united with our neighbors.”

But, in order for that to happen, this traditionally Eurosceptic country must have a seat at the table.

For the past 30 years, Denmark has been barred from participating in most European defense and security initiatives due to the defense reservation.

“From its inception until now, it has generally resulted in a loss of influence,” said Christine Nissen of the Danish Institute for International Studies. “We are unable to participate in the negotiations. We leave no trace.”

In reality, the Danes are not invited.
