BRITS are making the most of the long Bank Holiday weekend to raise funds for the Queen’s Jubilee.

However, many people will remember that “dread” feeling the morning after a night of partying.

Drinkers are plagued by anxiety, or the overwhelming feeling of anxiety that occurs during a hangover.

It makes them wonder what they said or did, how they embarrassed themselves, or if their friends have suddenly turned against them.

“People can experience that anxiety as regret and shame about what happened,” Dr Sally Adams, a lecturer in the Department of Psychology Addiction and Mental Health Group at the University of Bath, previously told.

When we drink our favourite cocktail, wine, or beer, the activity of neurotransmitters in the brain changes.

These brain chemicals are normally well-balanced, allowing us to make clear decisions, focus, and emotionally process information.

Alcohol alters this by increasing Gaba levels, which help us feel more relaxed, while decreasing glutamate levels, which control fear and emotions.

“The brain is desperate to try and correct that,” Dr. Adams said, “by giving us lower Gaba and increased glutamate.

Instead of returning to normal the next day at the level before we began drinking, our brain begins to overcompensate.

“This is why we experience anxiety and stress.”
