Kim Kardashian gets €1 damages for Paris robbery
A Paris court has awarded Kim Kardashian €1 ($1.15) in damages over the armed robbery she suffered in the French capital in 2016.
The symbolic amount was the compensation Kardashian had requested in the civil case, according to a lawyer involved in the proceedings.
The reality television star and entrepreneur was staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès during Paris Fashion Week on October 2, 2016, when armed robbers targeted her suite.
Kardashian sought symbolic compensation
Two robbers disguised as police officers entered Kardashian’s suite, restrained her with zip ties and tape and escaped with jewellery worth more than $6 million.
The stolen items included a diamond engagement ring she had received from her then-husband, rapper Kanye West, now known as Ye. Most of the jewellery has not been recovered.
Following the civil ruling, Kardashian and her stylist Simone Harouche, who was also present during the robbery, expressed gratitude to the French justice system.
They said the decision was about “accountability and recognition” rather than the financial compensation itself. Harouche was also awarded €1, the amount she had requested.
Hotel receptionist awarded more than €109,000
The court also awarded €109,516 ($126,472) to a former receptionist at the Hôtel de Pourtalès.
The receptionist had sought €550,000 in damages and interest over the trauma he said he experienced during the robbery. His lawyer, Mohand Ouidja, welcomed the award.
The hotel itself was awarded €50,000, according to the court’s written decisions cited by the Associated Press.
Eight convicted over robbery
The latest ruling follows a separate criminal trial in which eight people were found guilty of roles in the robbery.
Several defendants were elderly at the time of the trial, leading to the French nickname “les papys braqueurs”, or “grandpa robbers”.
The convicted defendants had already spent time in pretrial detention, so none returned to prison following the verdict, according to AP. None appealed the convictions.
