Govt plans to increase electricity price over Rs5 per unit

In a distressing development for electricity consumers, the government is preparing to impose an additional burden of Rs310 billion on them by increasing the basic electricity tariff.

The anticipated hike in tariff could surpass Rs5 per unit, spelling further financial strain for households and industries alike.

The move comes as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) for the determination of power purchase prices for the upcoming year. The hearing on the CPPA’s application is scheduled to take place on May 23 at Nepra.

According to estimates provided by the CPPA, the power purchase price is expected to range between Rs25.03 to Rs27.11 per unit. If approved, this increase in power purchase prices is likely to translate into a significant rise in electricity tariffs for consumers across the country.

Once Nepra grants final approval, a notification will be issued, formalizing the hike in electricity tariffs and implementing the additional burden on consumers.
