Chef’s ‘popcorn salad’ sparks outrage as people call it a ‘crime against humanity’

A chef has sparked outrage after her unique salad recipe went viral.

Molly Yeh, an American food blogger, appeared on her popular Food Network show Girl Meets Farm, to show viewers how she makes “Crunchy Snap Pea Popcorn Salad.”

She explained that the classic mid-Western dish, which comprises popcorn, vegetables and mayonnaise, is usually found in a church basement potluck, reports Daily Star.

Molly says: “Some people will put fish in it as well. You don’t think it’s going to work, but when you taste it, it’s really good.”

But viewers were less than impressed with the dish as some said Food Network should be “shut down” for airing the episode.

To make the sauce, she combines mayonnaise, sour cream, dijon mustard, sugar, apple cider vinegar, salt and pepper.

She mixes this with snap peas, carrot and chopped celery, before adding to the popcorn, which has been flavoured with cheese powder.

Molly then garnishes the salad with chopped watercress.

“What it looks like you’re getting a salad, but you look underneath, you see a pile of popcorn,” the presenter grins.

“That is my kind of salad. This is the kind of salad you eat with a spoon.”

She then helps herself to a large mouthful, before adding: “That is crunch on crunch on crunch, and I love the white cheddar powder.

“This salad is going to crunch… I mean, crush, at our party.”

The recipe was first shared on Food Network but has since gone viral after a tweet alerting social media users of the dish racked up more than two million views, as the person said: “What the hell is this.”

Naturally, the internet had a lot to say on the matter, with many people commenting on the controversial combination.

One person said: “If you bring me out some soggy mayo popcorn I will be going to jail that day.”

Another commented: “Never in my life have I seen a popcorn salad and I pray I don’t have to see it again.”

A third added: “‘I love the texture of the popcorn in the salad’ is literally where I stopped the video….how bad was it?”

“This was on FOOD NETWORK? Shut it down,” added someone else.

And: “That’s a crime against humanity,” said a fifth.
