The ECP claims that it is completely capable of holding general elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Election Commission (ECP) said on Thursday that it is fully capable of holding general elections in accordance with the country’s laws.

In response to claims made by some lawmakers, the commission stated that the ECP was well aware of its constitutional and legal obligations and was carrying them out as usual.

It urged political leaders to refrain from making unfounded criticisms of the ECP and assured them that the ECP was completely dedicated to carrying out its legal responsibilities as outlined in the country’s constitution.

The President’s Secretariat had requested the ECP to recommend dates for the next general elections, which will be held within 90 days of the National Assembly’s dissolution, according to the President’s House on April 6.

“In a letter dated April 5, 2022 addressed to ECP, the President’s Secretariat requested that ECP propose date(s) for holding general elections within 90 days of the National Assembly’s dissolution, i.e., April 3, 2022, in accordance with the provisions of Pakistan’s Constitution,” the President House said in a statement.

The President shall choose a date, not later than 90 days from the date of dissolution of the National Assembly, for conducting general elections to the National Assembly, according to clause 5 (A) of Article 48 and clause 2 of Article 224 of the Constitution, according to the letter.
