Heatwave 2022 – live: A yellow notice has been issued in Delhi, while temperatures in Pakistan are likely to reach 50 degrees Celsius.
With temperatures in India exceeding 44 degrees Celsius, the meteorological agency in Delhi issued a yellow notice, warning that the heatwave might cause “moderate” health problems for susceptible populations.
As the temperature rises, some Indian states are experiencing lengthy power disruptions due to increased electrical consumption.
The Indian government has warned that the heatwave engulfing much of South Asia is only going to get worse, with temperatures in Jacobabad, Pakistan, expected to reach 50 degrees Celsius.
“Temperatures are increasing swiftly across the country, and rising considerably earlier than typical,” India’s Narendra Modi said in an online conference with state governors.
An unusually early heatwave has already delivered severe temperatures to a huge section of India’s northwest this month, following the country’s warmest March in the previous 122 years.
The union minister for coal and mines has released a public statement stating that there is “no need to fear,” and that the country has “adequate coal supply.”
However, with cooling power demand expected to rise further, there are fears that thermal power plants are struggling with coal stocks, with states like as Maharashtra saying that they only have coal stockpiles for two days.
