A woman in India endangering her life for water.

A viral video of a woman scaling the wall of a well to gain access to water has highlighted the severe scarcity in several areas of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

The woman is seen in the video going down the well without a rope or harness to access water.

People in Ghusiya village were forced to take such drastic measures after wells and ponds dried up.

Several other areas in India are experiencing a similar water crisis.

Videos of Indians risking their lives to get water go viral all the time. A similar video from April showed a woman going down a well in Maharashtra state to get water.

According to a 2019 global report, India is one of 17 countries where “water stress” is “extremely high.”

According to the report, the states of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, and Haryana have been hit the hardest by the crisis.

Every summer, water scarcity is a recurring issue in Madhya Pradesh. The state government has promised that every village will have access to running water by 2024. However, millions of people continue to lack access to safe drinking water.

In Ghusiya, angry villagers have announced that they will boycott local elections this year in order to protest the government.

“We need to go down the well to get water.” There are three wells [here], all of which are nearly dry. “There are no hand pumps with water,” one woman told the news agency ANI.
