Army chief Gen Asim Munir promoted to field marshal
In a historic development, the federal cabinet has approved Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s proposal to promote Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir to the rank of field marshal.
The decision comes in recognition of his unparalleled military leadership during Pakistan’s recent victory in the Marka-e-Haq, following an unprovoked war imposed by India on the night of May 6 and 7.
Chaired by the prime minister, the federal cabinet meeting discussed a five-point agenda, including the country’s overall political, economic, and security situation, as well as budget proposals for the next fiscal year. However, the key highlight of the meeting was the unanimous approval of General Asim Munir’s elevation in military rank — a rare honour in Pakistan’s history.
The meeting noted that Pakistan recently went through a difficult phase in its history when innocent civilians, including women and children, were targeted. The PM is said to have met President Asif Ali Zardari and taken him into confidence on the decision to promote the army chief.
According to the cabinet, the promotion was granted to acknowledge General Asim Munir’s brilliant military leadership, bravery, and commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cabinet members praised the armed forces for defeating the enemy decisively and hailed the military’s efforts in protecting civilians and national interests on every front.
