No. 10 says Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been advised he will face no further action after police closed their Partygate investigation.
Mr Johnson’s wife, Carrie, will not face any additional penalties.
They were both punished this month for violating Covid laws at Mr Johnson’s birthday celebration in Downing Street in June 2020.
The Metropolitan Police says the investigation into lockdown breaches in and around Downing Street has concluded.
It led in the issuance of 126 Fixed Penalty Notices for occurrences occurring on eight different dates.
The conclusion of the police investigation allows for the release of the full report by top officials.
Anger among Conservative MPs has long since subsided, and it will now subside even further – for the time being.
However, we are still awaiting the report from senior civil servant Sue Gray, which might further embarrass Boris Johnson.
Remember that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is still facing questioning.
He is awaiting the results of a Durham Police investigation. He and his lawyers are as certain as they can be that he will be exonerated.
But they can’t be sure.
