The most common benefit that goes unclaimed is council tax relief, with over three million people missing out on £2.7 billion in total.

Around half a million families are expected to be missing out on little under £1 billion in child benefit, despite the fact that some eligible families opt not to claim.

Meanwhile, more than half a million low-income retirees are eligible for additional state pension supplements.

Unclaimed Pension Credit is worth £1.47 billion, and individuals may get thousands of pounds per year.
