Mariah Carey is suing for copyright on her song.

Singer All I Want for Christmas is You, Mariah Carey’s 1994 Christmas mega-hit, is being sued for copyright infringement.

Songwriter Andy Stone claims he co-wrote a song with the same title five years ago, claiming that Ms Carey took advantage of his “popularity” and “style.”

The two songs appear musically different despite sharing a title, but Mr Stone claims Ms Carey caused confusion and did not ask for permission.

Ms Carey has yet to respond.

Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas Is You is a must-have on any Christmas playlist and one of the most well-known Christmas records of all time.

It first appeared on the album Merry Christmas in 1994.

On Spotify, the song has been streamed one billion times.

Ms Carey admitted in a recent memoir that she wrote “most of the song on a cheap little Casio keyboard.”

Mariah Carey’s Christmas anthem has finally topped the charts.

Mr Stone, who performs as Vince Vance with the band Vince Vance and the Valiants, is seeking at least $20 million (£16 million) in damages.

According to the complaint, Ms Carey, her co-writer Walter Afanasieff, and record label Sony Music Entertainment earned “undeserved profits” from the song, and the defendants “knowingly, wilfully, and intentionally engaged in a campaign” to infringe copyright.

Mr Stone claims that he never authorized the use of his song for any purpose, including “the creation of a derivative work.”
